Tucked into the early pages of my 2020 planner (lol) is a post-it that reads START WHERE YOU ARE. This little bit of peak Instagram life advice has become a really useful mantra for me when I remember to use it. Mostly I need this reminder for times when the task anxiety is hitting me real hard, but it’s also useful when I’m letting perfectionism stand in the way of getting started – striving for something that I’ll never reach if I never begin.
I have been meaning to revive this blog for a while now, but I never feel like I have anything monumental enough to say to warrant a beginning. Why now? Why is this the time to come back here? What grand adventures or announcements do I have?
And obviously the answer is none. No grand adventures. My most epic journeys these days are my trips to the mailbox.
But I have been up to a couple things that I would like to share in one collected place. For now I’m going to let that be enough to get started.
- Last spring my friend Deboki and I started a nonfiction book club on YouTube. We both decided our stack of unread nonfiction was getting a little out of hand, and that it would be a lot more fun to get into it if we could do it with a friend. Deboki also set up a Substack to share updates about book selection & live show dates. Our next book is The Mushroom at the End of the World by Anna Tsing, which we are discussing at 5pm ET on Saturday March 13th over on Deboki’s channel.
- Speaking of liveshows, I’m doing a weekly WandaVision discussion with Marines for Snark Squad.
- Also on the Snark Squad front, I am contributing to some recaps again – Mari is still doing the heavy lifting, but I’m at least present on the site again. I’m currently reading The Mister (because we love to snark a shitty book) and watching Nancy Drew (which I genuinely enjoy!)
- Snark Squad Pod & Cooler Than Homework are starting to get back in the swing of more regular uploads. I’m really excited for Cooler Than Homework because we only have one more movie from the year 2000 and then we get into a string of high nostalgia 2001 movies. Meanwhile, Snark Squad Pod is beginning its foray in to the DCEU, so be on the lookout for that.
- Oh also I set up a Twitch account lol. I’ve been playing around with livestreaming a lot lately so sometimes I stream while I play Among Us with my friends. #justpandemicthings
In addition to my own nonsense, here are some other things I have been loving from around the internet:
- This bookslikewoah Historical Accuracy is Garbage (and Here’s Why) video is very long but also very good!
- In other booktube content, Books are my Social Life made a fantastic video about US/Global North centrism in the online book community. The video is about the online book community in its particulars, but it’s a really great discussion that has applicability in other online spaces and media discussions.
- I recently discovered The Bézier Game and it has been a solid mindless go-to activity
- The Project For Awesome starts next weekend! I’m gonna miss getting to getting weird with my friends in person, but I am so excited to have this fun wholesome content to look forward to.
That’s all for now. In theory, this is a thing I’m trying to do with some regularity, but who can say when I will do this again. Time has lost all meaning. Thanks for indulging me on this little link dump. I hope you’re staying safe.
