Guest Post: Shitty Movie Awareness Club. Teen Wolf. Snickerdoodles. Awesome.

Today’s blog post is brought to you by Meaghan Luby of My Scribbled Notebook and Clutzy Cooking, courtesy of the Shitty Movie Blog Ring. To the best of my knowledge, the ring is still untitled, though I am partial to the Bad Movie Awareness Society (which I think I got from Coyote Rose). This month’s theme, in honor of March Madness, is Awful Sports Movies. My post on the awesomely bad movie Stick It can be found here at the blog of the lovely Tits Coyote Rose, Dancing on the Bar of Life.

First! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Meaghan Luby (Lubes in the 20sb chat room, thanks Nugs & Nyx again for that nickname, ha) and I am a food blogger and pseudo comic drawer. I have one blog on each topic, my food blog making food all I seem to talk about/think about and my comic/writing blog documenting my ridiculous thoughts and life. I am new to 20sb but, really, what a great group. If you are reading this and aren’t a 20sb, as unlikely as those odds seem considering the post topic, you should join. Truly, funtasmic group of bloggers and humanoids.

Now then, on to the main event!

Sports movies! Yikes. When first discussing this posting round, I was amused and amazed by large percentage of the movie ideas. I just didn’t seem to have any of my own. Sports movies are easy to think of, bad ones are easy as well. But all the best of the bad seemed to be taken! And then, I remembered one of my all time favorite sports movies. A motion picture tale of a young, unpopular, underdog of a teenager, who beats all the odds and takes his school basketball into VICTORY! Teenage fame and long lusted after high school girls throwing themselves at him ensues. It was the perfect choice for a review!

And Teen Wolf, as many of you may know, is a cult classic from the 80’s that is, really and truly, a thing of cinematic beauty. What a bonus!

That, of course, is only true if beauty here is being defined as astoundingly horrible/crazy make up, plot, and acting. Outside of Michael J Fox, I am not sure what happened casting wise here. It is pretty typical of your teenage soap opera cast from the 80s though. Which means the acting is just a total win of over the top deliveries and dramatic mood swings.

Speaking of which, the basic flow of the movie is about a teenager who becomes a teen wolf and plays basketball AS the teen wolf and wins everything for his team. Luckily, no one finds it weird, scary, or even really overly shocking that this kid is a teen wolf. It is just awesome that the basketball team is going to win now.

Remember what I said about realistic costumes? While the rest of the cast DOES fit the role of “normal 80’s crew and some 80’s basketball teams”, the costumes for MJF and the man who plays his wolf Dad both leave a lot to be desired.

The costumes aren’t even scary or intimidating in the slightest! They look like Chewie. Or alf. Or tall Ewoks with fangs.

Wow. Tall Ewoks with fangs DOES sound kind of scary. But I assure you that the wolf looks in Teen Wolf are not wolf-worthy in the slightest.

Maybe I am being biased to what a teen wolf should look like?

Wow. Thank you, Rolling Stone.

Still, I don’t think I am being biased here. I feel like a movie about Teen Wolf should be about Wolf activities. Not basketball. And being a teenager. Which, in this movie, translated into a lot of nonsensical teenage angst. The thought patterns of these characters, from the Coaches to the hormone ridden basketball players, made no sense whatsoever.

If I had one piece of advice, therefore, I’d say to take this title LITERALLY. “Teen Wolf” isn’t a cool werewolf movie. Or a cool basketball movie. Or any kind of a cool movie. It is a movie about a Teenager who happens to be a Werewolf. Which, again, everyone is cool with and it makes him exceptionally popular. Teenage Bestiality may also be an underlying theme of this movie, not quite certain what to make of the romance and sexual relationships set up on screen.

In keeping with my final advice, I will end my post with a connection to my own blog. Literal Snicker-Doodles. Check them out here:
